The origin and early evolution of eukaryotes in the light of phylogenomics

Eugene V Koonin Genome Biology 2010, 11:209 (5 May 2010)

This article is part of a collection on 10th Anniversary...

Comparative genomics and new phylogenies of eukaryote groups suggest a scenario in which the mitochondrial endosymbiosis triggered the origin of eukaryotes.

Kristen S Swithers, Alireza G Senejani, Gregory P Fournier, J Peter Gogarten BMC Evolutionary Biology 2009, 9:303 (31 December 2009)

Inteins and group I introns, but not spliceosomal or group II introns, are inserted into conserved, functionally active regions of host proteins and evade deletion by imposing functional constraints on the target site.

Exon definition as a potential negative force against intron losses in evolution

Deng-Ke Niu Biology Direct 2008, 3:46 (13 November 2008)

If the splicing of pre-mRNAs is initiated by exon definition, an exon larger than a particular size may cause splicing errors . Intron loss that results in oversized exons may thus be deleterious and selected against.
